In the medieval law-documents \"freeman\" was called \"ingenuus\", \"liber\" or \"freier Bauer\". And a narrative historical material of 11^<th> century distingushed between (1) time-honored, aristocratic freedom, (2) freedom under a king's protection, (3) freedom in exchangeable for a life and (4) freedom of self decision-making. We can interpret (1) as social freedom, (2) as political freedom, (3) and (4) as ideal freedom. The Frankish Kingship in the pioneer period gave freedom to the military settlers who settled in the boundaries of the Kingdom. K. Bosl calls them \"king's freemen\", and regards their freedom as something like the above (2). But the king's freemen were not allowed to move freely, because they had to protect the border. In 9^<th> and 10^<th> century, they fell down in status of the manor-serf after the self-donation to a church or monastery. On the other side, the medieval documents gave to the unfree dependents such varietynames as servus, mancipium, ancila, famulus, collibertus, proprius de corpore, Eigenmann, Knecht, Schalk etc. Socially there could be great differences among them. The landless unfreemen were obliged to do their master unlimited service. By Bosl's opinion, in the high medieval period, they were authorized to gain freedom by having performed their duties, for example, to settle into unplowed land, to act as a messenger-or transport-function. Further, a serf who ran away his master of the manor and seeked shelter in a king's city, could be judged as a free citizen after one year and one day. Thus the mass of the unfreemen could have risen socially. Needless to say, that freedom was not so limitless as the above (1), but could be described as \"unfree freedom\" or \"free unfreedom\".
